The Tarot predicts the journey as Ray Long comes to the town of Pettington hoping to leave his rage behind and begin a new life. And when he meets Skye Roosevelt, he begins to believe he can recreate himself and find his future in Pettington. But Pettington is no ordinary town with a metaphysical store that tells its future, a whore house that keeps it financially secure, and secrets long buried just beneath its surface. And soon Ray Long begins to spiral down into the pit of violence he has always known. He begins to hear the Devil whisper in his ear, and he soon discovers his old self is more soothing to him than the new life he’s created. And when he tries to murder two of Pettington’s own, Skye Roosevelt must search deep within herself for her own self identity in order to protect her son as Ray Long battles the past in order to separate the passion from the pain. Broken Wing is a story about an abuser who was a victim of abuse as a child. This is a story about his family relations, the need for love, the devastation of rejection, and the merry-go-round that keeps turning. And this story is about self-identity, a self-identity the character believes defines him, dark and rigid, until he is pushed to the extreme, only then can he step out and stand naked with this identity at his feet as he lays claim to the past that molded him and the passion that fills his heart.

I admit to being hesitant on buying this book and reading it. The cover is intriguing on its own, but the description was a bit lacking. But the book came highly recommended so I took a chance, and I don’t regret it.

The story starts off in the perspective of Ray Long, a character you know nearly nothing about and at the same time, as you read the story, know too much about. It’s eerie how you can know so much about a character and his/her troubled past and still not know anything about them. But never the less, the introduction was captivating and very well written… it sealed the deal and kept me turning pages. It’s not really a book I would normally pick up, though it is fiction, its written with such a real feel. Little by little you learn about each character, getting a glimpse into the inner workings of their minds and their day to day lives and you forge this connection with them, they almost seem tangible like people you would meet on the street or at work, people you might befriend.

The story itself is a turbulent plane ride into the small town of Pettington with real characters that will stir up so many different emotions, from fear to rage to pity and hope. Real characters that make real decisions and real mistakes. I guess it’s safe to say, the one world best used to describe this title is real. Sure I could use intriguing, captivating, frightening and so many other words but the one word that I feel encompasses all this book has to offer is real. This story is one masterful flood of emotions and situations that will make you love, hate and respect each character individually.

But really, what I find most endearing about this book is the symbolism that you find behind both the title and the cover. A symbol that will have little to no meaning to you as a reader until you’ve allowed the story of Ray Long, Skye Roosevelt, Cinn, David, Bonnie, Issac and Daisy to unfold. Each character will get their chance to shine and fall from grace and some even get the chance to rise again. It’s a chilling read, and all too comforting. The comfort, that comes from the realism and the decisions that while you may or may not agree with, you as the reader can understand.
Anna Klay writes a world that resembles our own jaded society because it is, jaded. It’s an eye opener into the world of the mistreated, neglected, abused and even those people who want for nothing. It just goes to show that when dealing with people, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Take a chance and read it, I wasn’t disappointed, you might not be either. Personally, I look forward to reading more work from this author.

Broken Wing edition by Anna Klay Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Broken Wing will take you on a roller coaster of different emotions as you are taken through a genuine and painful story of past abuse and it's effect on the suffering the victim and the victims family and friends go through. There are plenty of mental break downs and you can feel the psychological strain that is put on everyone in Skye and Ray's life.

While reading this book you are also picking up little pieces of advice on how to love again, and forgive and love those in your life that have hurt you, and how to protect yourself along the way. Slowly you are opened up to the characters mind and you understand their personality bit by bit. This gave me a great sense of connection to each of the characters, and I was anxious to find out more as I continued to read.

This would be a great book for a book club to discuss since there are so many subliminal messages and symbolism that could mean different things to different readers. I would be interested in hearing what other readers of Broken Wing thought of the book. I would discuss how each reader comprehended the book, how the book effected them, and what they took away from the book. It's powerful, profound, and opens may readers eyes to the abuse and neglect that people out there are hiding, without giving you the slightest impression they live with deep dark secrets. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by a cover, or a person by their smile on their face.

The cover is intriguing enough to catch any readers eye, which helps considering it was lacking a synopsis that accurately describes what kind of book you are picking up. I found no spelling or grammar issues, which was a relief considering the complexity of the book. You can't prepare yourself for what is contained inside this book, or how it will personally effect you. I give this book a 5/5.
